Bordered by the Pacific, crossed by the Andes and cut by the equinoctial line, Ecuador is an exceptional land which contains some of the greatest biodiversity on the globe. Intertwined with this natural diversity is an important cultural mosaic made up of mestizos – descendants of Spanish and Native American ancestors – and 13 indigenous nationalities. Each of these groups has its own identity closely linked to its territory.
