Church of Saint John

About

The church is located on the main square and the highest part of the town. It has a wide neo-Romanesque facade.

Throughout its existence, which continues to this day, the church of Taugon has suffered 3 major damages, which weaken the building:
In May 1816, the upper part of the south wall of the bell tower collapsed, falling 6 meters high and piercing the roof of the church's chancel. The rest of the tower was also in danger of collapsing. On May 13, the town council decided to launch urgent reconstruction work.
- On July 12, 1861, lightning struck the church's bell tower, weakening its walls and, in general, those of the entire building.
- On Sunday, March 31, 1912, around 5 a.m., the roof of the western end of the nave collapsed.
On this Palm Sunday, a few hours before the ceremony which was expected to bring together several hundred people, the event is considered miraculous and placed under the sign of the protection of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Work has begun again to rebuild and consolidate this church, which has already suffered from these events over the centuries.

A monumental XNUMXth century altarpiece occupies the back of the sanctuary. It houses wooden statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul as well as a bas-relief of the Pietà. The eagle tabernacle, with its columns surmounted by firepots, is from the same period. The side altars are surmounted by two beautiful statues of the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist, also from the XNUMXth century.

One notices in the cemetery which adjoins the church, the carved foot of a hosannière cross from the XNUMXth century.
