About
Recent excavations around the Saint Vivien church have unearthed a stone sarcophagus.
This sarcophagus has been returned to the Saint Vivien church.
Since the start of the sanitation work in Marsais, archaeologists have been working around the Saint Vivien church.
During the digging of trenches, they were able to observe traces of past activities, a blocked opening, and foundations that appear to correspond to the old facade of the church dating from the 14th century.
They were able to observe several burials in prepared coffins, as well as the sarcophagus which may have been placed opposite the old church portal during the 14th and 15th centuries.
This trapezoidal sarcophagus no longer had its lid (a fragment had been found last year) and contained only one person.
Ceramics and bones, as well as 222 burials, were excavated at this site. Traces of a copper alloy headdress, several copper and gold beads, and funerary bottles were found, raising questions about the burial practices of the individuals interred opposite the church and their dating.
